It could be your coordination of foot and hand movement. If the alignment is not correct after you change to the second smallest chain ring then your derailleur is bent. Most likely your derailers need adjustment.
If the bike still does not shift repeat the entire process.
A bike with 30 or more gears is not an indication of a machine designed to break the land speed record any more than a bike with only a single gear assuming similar ratios. While pedaling a bike and shifting gears its always important to be moving forward. The main reason why it is hard to change gears on your motorcycle is because fluids tend to freeze and the gear shifting process becomes harder and more difficult creating a stiff gear shift. Pressing it forward will shift the bicycle up into a higher gear.
